Indian Rummy Championship - Live Spectating Platform
Reframed an internal scoring tool into a live, spectator-friendly broadcast platform for offline rummy tournaments. Proposed a QR-based card tracking system that simplified a problem that was being approached with camera-heavy setups.
MVP Category-first
Context
Games24x7’s Indian Rummy Championship was an offline tournament. PMs used an internal scoring application and the event was recorded for basic post-event marketing. RummyCircle was the market leader in Indian rummy, which gave the company the right to attempt category-defining innovations. I identified the opportunity to reframe the Championship as a live spectator sport.
Approach
- Challenged the operational framing. Proposed treating the Championship like a premier sporting broadcast, with live gameplay visualization, player statistics, and match context.
- Early proposals leaned toward camera-heavy setups focused on players’ hands. These would be fragile, expensive, and intrusive.
- Pushed for a simpler approach: a QR-based card tracking system, where each card carried a QR code scanned as cards were dealt or placed on the table. Removed the need for unnatural player behavior or continuous camera coverage.
- Conceptualized and wireframed a first-of-its-kind spectating interface showing live gameplay, player stats, and match context.
- Aligned leadership and led development of MVPs to validate feasibility before committing further investment.
Result
- Delivered functional MVPs demonstrating live, spectator-friendly rummy gameplay without disrupting the offline experience.
- Not launched commercially, but shifted organizational thinking: rummy from a card game to a potential spectator sport.
- Established a scalable foundation for digitizing offline gameplay.
- Influenced future conversations around content, streaming, and brand-led experiences.
